Ode to the humble rose

From the day you first see light
From when you breathe as a bud
You know it’s a matter of time
‘Fore you lie crushed in mud

To bloom is to surely die
Ripe for an eager pluck
Yet bloom you certainly must
It’s a fate you cannot buck

A lady’s hair you adorn
Or to a bouquet you belong
Or, into a garland you go
You know you can never do wrong

Even as petals, you serve
To the Lord, they offer you so
Or, you lie on a person’s grave
On his last journey, with him you go

So short though your life may be
You have no grouse, grief or ire
For a rose lives not for its own sake
It lives for another’s desire.

Oh so rightly expressed, and in such beautiful words.

Lovely way to delineate the fate of the rose. A little sad.

Beautiful Raja.

The selflessness of the Rose. It exists to give pleasure.

A great example of YOLO?

Blessed is the rose flower which lives for anothers' sake,
Blessed is its death, when it dies bringing a smile!
Lovely ode to the humble rose, Sir.

Yet bloom you certainly must....well written.

This is a fine piece of poetry dedicated to a rose. Beautiful!!

That was beautiful, the humble rose is an apt metaphor for those who always give..though fortunately in the latter case 'to bloom' is not always 'to die'...one is often enriched and internally strengthened by that process of giving, very much in line with the sentiments expressed in your 'You live only once' post. Lovely poem.

What a lovely perspective, Raja. I hadn't seen it that way, but it's so true. Like all of Nature, the rose gives and asks for no reward.

@Ava, thanks. I wouldn't consider it sad, it's how it's meant to be, I suppose. :-)

@Shalini, thank you. For the rose, that's probably its raison d'etre? To give pleasure to others.

@Bhavya,thanks. Indeed, the rose serves its purpose, whether in life or in death. Makes others happy.

@Rama, thank you! :-)

@JANU, thank you. Glad you liked it. :-)

@Rainbow Hues, thanks. :-)

@Kislaya Gopal,I feel there is an indescribable power in those who make others happy. Their life somehow seems so much more fulfilling.

@Usha, glad you liked it. Thank you. :-)

@Silverambrosia, yes, there is some sort of common strand between my YOLO post and this one. The theme is making / seeing others happy. Thanks for your compliment. :-)

@Corinne, indeed this is true of Nature. It gives and gives. And we keep taking from it, sadly without reciprocating. Glad you liked the poem. :-)

Very well said. The rose flowers for joy, flowers to say hello, flowers to say goodbye.
