The Friday evening indulgence (part-1)

  1. (Originally posted on Storify in April 2013, copied here. Had to split it into two parts - the post wasn't getting saved on the blog here.)
    Mehfil-e-nagma, bazm-e-ishrat (part-1)

  2. It all started pretty innocuously. I hadn't posted songs in a while. It was a Friday evening - and, since songs are never really very far from my mind anyway, I just got into the mood. The idea was just to post the odd song or two. Or five. As it turned out, it was..hmm..a little more than that.
  3. I started with this sweet song from Main Chup Rahungi (1962). I am a big fan of Meena Kumari. And I do like Sunil Dutt a lot too. I've always liked this song.

  4. Koi bata de dil hai jahaan, kyon hota hai dard wahaan, teer chala ke ye to na poochho dil hai kahaan aur dard kahaan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1Yq86qTir0

  5. I've always liked this song from Black Cat (1959). Minoo Mumtaz, Balraj Sahni...

  6. Main tumhi se poochhti hoon, mujhe tum se pyar kyon hai, mujhe tum daga na doge, mujhe aitbaar kyon hai http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Yd3O65EfYM

  7. I love this song from Shikari (1963). And I'm always happy to push composer GS Kohli's case.

  8. Agar main poochhoon jawab doge, dil kyun mera tadap raha hai - Rafisaab-Lata. The much-underrated GS Kohli. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aa4fLv0LNKA

  9. And although I have my misgivings about Aarti (1962) as a movie, I've always pushed its case when it comes to songs. Most people know the songs, they don't know they are from Aarti.

  10. Oh, and songs of Aarti (1962). Fantastic!!! Majrooh & Roshan.
Kabhi to milegi, kahin to milegi, baharon ki manzil http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkssgVxxvtI

  11. And the teasing Baar baar tohe kya samjhaaye paayal ki jhankaar. Lata-Rafisaab. Meena Kumari looks awesome.:-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqfl4wkKwCI

  12. And an eternal Rafi saab favourite, also from Aarti. Ab kya misaal doon main tumhaare shabaab ki. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgGQprccafg

  13. Staying with Aarti(1962), here's a LOVELY Rafi-Lata duet. Aapne yaad dilaaya to mujhe yaad aaya. Mesmerizing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OO5SKkarvwo

  14. The meandering continued...my mind began thinking of Rajendra Kumar movies. (Don't ask me why!).

  15. Moving from Aarti to Gharana (1961), here's Rafi-Asha with "Jab se tumhe dekha hai, aankhon mein tum hi tum ho". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzVntnlyEbI

  16. Gharana also had this famous - and lovely - Rafisaab song "Husnwaale tera jawaab nahin". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Pn81ApIsfs

  17. The Rajendra Kumar-Mala Sinha starrer Gehra Daag (1963) with "tumhe paake humne jahaan paa liya hai" Shakeel-Ravi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJQI9PJC6Wk

  18. Difficult to think of Rajendra Kumar and NOT think of Mere Mehboob songs...so I had to throw one in.

  19. In a movie full of lovely songs, this one holds its own Yaad mein teri jaag jaag ke hum. Rafi-Lata. Shakeel-Naushad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2b_Ka4aQFso

  20. And Humrahi and Sasuraal. Rajendra Kumar did act in a lot of South Indian productions.

  21. Mubarak Begum this time with Rafisaab. Mujhko apne gale laga lo, aye mere humraahi. Lovely! Jubilee Kumar again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4X-EoMU0d1c

  22. And here's Rajendra Kumar again. Kya mil gaya haaye, kya kho gaya, mujhe mere balam kya ho gaya. Sasural. S-J. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pc734rx00kc

  23. Sasural,South Indian production, was a big hit. Most famous song "Teri pyari pyari soorat ko" got best song award. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbReJSt056U

  24. Then a Rajendra Kumar film which I saw a couple of years ago. Kept me engaged in the first half, completely lost me in the second. But I remembered why I'd seen the movie in the first place. It was for THIS song.

  25. From another Rajendra Kumar film, here's a lovely Lata song. Wo jo milte the kabhi from Akeli Mat Jaiyo (1963). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdpvd6_g0m0

  26. At this point, having moved to a female solo, I thought I'd stay on that track.

  27. I think I should post some songs by female artistes also before somebody calls me a misogynist.

  28. One of my Lata favs (and one I've posted many times here) Dil ka diya jala ke gaya - Akashdeep. Chitragupt's music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXljiw0rgXs

  29. One of the first Lata songs I remember. Movie (Nagin) was huge hit. Lots of hit songs. Mera dil ye pukaare aaja. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mr_n9R3E_w4

  30. Another Lata song I remember from my very early days. A very famous one. Jiya beqaraar hai. Shankar-Jaikishen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITcUo3yDLd8

  31. It got overshadowed by "kahin deep jale" but this one, from BSB,is sweet (ok, it's Waheeda, so that helps! :-)) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtEuRWfvPXA

  32. Arguably Lata's most iconic film song "Aayega aane wala" from Mahal (1949). Khemchand Prakash. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03DXW_rV54U

  33. Have always enjoyed getting responses - it keeps the mehfil interactive, otherwise I feel I'm just talking to myself. Referring to the classic "Mera dil ye pukaare aaja", there was this comment.

  34. @rucsb Exactly! I used to hear it a LOT on Vividh Bharti. Bheega bheega hai sama, aise mein hai tu kahaan...got imprinted in my mind.:-)

  35. My mind was still on "aayega aayega" before moving on to another song.

  36. Deepak bagair kaise, parwaane jal rahe hain..koi nahin chalaata, aur teer chal rahe hain. Tadpega koi kab tak, be-aas, be-sahaare...

  37. Lekin ye keh rahe hain, dil ke mere ishaare..aayega aayega aayega..aayega aanewaala..aayega..aayega. I can listen to this a million times!

  38. I deliberately typed out the lyrics. Everybody knows it's Lata, it's Khemchand Prakash's music. How many know the lyricist's name? Nakshab.

  39. And this is where, and how, the mehfil began getting steered towards "Lata for Shankar Jaikishen".

  40. @Raja_Sw And I am on Lata / Madan Mohan/Shankar Jaikishen binge. Perhaps the best songs she sang!

  41. @anoopsaxena Indeed. With Madanmohan, just amazing. With S-J, also a fair number of good ones, esp early on.

  42. Continued in part 2, after a dinner break...
  43. Read part-2 here .
